About

My name is Lisa Baker. I am a specialist tutor in dyslexia, languages and literacy intervention, qualified at postgraduate level. My experience includes working for Dyslexia Action as a tutor and teaching study skills to students with dyslexia in universities around the Northeast. Prior to this work, I trained and taught as a teacher of German, French and English as a Foreign Language in colleges, schools – primary and secondary, and the military.

I have extensive experience of learning different languages and as a result have built a wide knowledge of how language is structured, how to teach students in overcoming difficulties around grammar, punctuation, spelling, vocabulary and sentence structure, as well as developing strategies for stronger working memories. My background and qualifications in both dyslexia and languages provide an effective and successful approach to delivering literacy tuition.

Most of all, I aim to ensure that all my students feel comfortable, confident and enjoy their tuition; children use games and hands-on activities to help with learning, as well as understanding that making mistakes is all part of learning. They soon develop a routine within the sessions that make them feel more confident and less anxious.

Young people and adults can develop their skills in a way that enables more independence and confidence in their studies. A programme of study is individually tailored to the student’s own requirements based on discussion between the tutor and student. This may focus on general aspects of literacy skills or be more specifically aimed at academic studies.

I am a member of the Dyslexia Guild and hold DBS clearance.
